Ric Returns to Taiji
Ric O Barry, star of The Cove is on the ground in Taiji this week, bringing media attention to "the little town with the really big secret."
As he says on the TakePart blog:
"You have to understand that this is SO IMPORTANT. These TV stations have REFUSED to cover the story in Taiji for years and years. NOW, for the first time, they have shown up, with cameras rolling."
The annual dolphin drive, scheduled to resume in September has not yet started up, to the relief of many.
But O'Barry, who can only stay for a week, tempers joy with reality.
"There were no dolphins taken on the first two days because we have managed to focus so much media attention on the slaughter,"
As O'Barry told The Daily Telegraph, "I feel great, but I know it's only temporary."
But many feel genuine relief that O Barry, who has had to elude local authorities for years, is now treated cordially by police and Japanese citizens.
Go Ric!
A Word From Louie
We back here in the safety of our homes and warmth of our beds salute Ric.
By maintaining media scrutiny of the cove where the hunts take place, we can save some dolphin lives. But let's not get lazy, there is more to be done.
We need to keep the pressure on:
The fishermen, the world is watching.
The Japanese government, there are toxic levels of mercury in the dolphin meat.
The media in Japan. We applaud them for finally covering the drive, but let's talk about mercury too.
The IWC, killing dolphins is allowed in their book.
Also, we need to remain vigilant in the cove of Taiji.
Slaughter can resume at any point during the dolphin's migration season, from September to April.
Let's all put an end to these crimes against nature and humanity.
Oscar Buzz
The Cove has been getting tons of critical praise.
And continued thanks to everyone for urging others to see The Cove.
As we all know, the more people that see this film, the harder it will be for these crimes to continue.
Now since Ebert mentioned the O word in Early August, the rumer is out there.
The ultimate seal of approval in the film industry.
Even a nomination is BOG (box office gold).
Let's all keep our fingers crossed.
