Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Tiger Orchid in Bloom

The Garden’s 300-pound tropical orchid is blooming for the first time since 2008 – and for only the third time in its 13-year residence at BBG. Even in its native habitat of Southeast Asia, the species blooms infrequently—reportedly once every two to four years. For a specimen to blossom in cultivation and at this latitude is a special event indeed. Don’t miss this rare and beautiful event.

IckyFest Weekend

Science takes center stage as the 4th annual IckyFest Weekend returns to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum on Saturday, November 19th and Sunday, November 20th from 10am-5pm each day. Boasting a variety of science-based activities, IckyFest is designed to educate children about naturally occurring events that are usually considered gross, but are important to the cycle of life.

During this unique weekend festival, kids become grossologists — scientific experts on all things slimy, yucky, and downright disgusting, while creating their very own snotty slime, touch creepy creatures, smell pungent cheese, study the New York City sewers, and more! Children of all ages are encouraged to attend.  All IckyFest Weekend programs are included with general Museum admission.

The Brooklyn Museum’s Fifth Annual Children’s Book Fair & Peter and the Wolf Performance

Saturday, November 19, noon–6pm

This Saturday, families can enjoy a full day of activities at the Brooklyn Museum. Start with the Children’s Book Fair at noon, where families are invited to meet their favorite Brooklyn-based authors and illustrators and then stay for a comedic kid’s performance of Peter and the Wolf at 4pm. The Book Fair will feature more than 30 newly published stories and participants will be able engage in book signings, an interactive game, and book readings. The Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra presents Sergei Prokofiev’s classic interpretation of Peter and the Wolf with narration and comedic routine by the Maestrosities.

Both events are free with Museum admission.  As seating is limited for the Peter and the Wolf performance, advance ticket purchase for general admission is recommended via www.museumtix.com.

Wednesday, Nov 30, 7pm
Dweck Center for Contemporary Culture

23 years ago, Susan Hartman, reporting for The New York Times, profiled a group of talented jumpers on her troubled Brooklyn block. For the past two years, she has been documenting the amazing young women they’ve become. Hartman will present the ongoing project, including two short videos, followed by an on-stage talk with the young women. Hartman has written for The New York Times, Newsday, and The Christian Science Monitor, often following her subjects for months. She teaches journalism and nonfiction at New York University, and is also on the faculty of the International Center of Photography (ICP).
