The Cove screens in Tokyo
The Cove had its only public screening in Japan this morning at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Director Louie Psihoyos was met by media crews when he landed at Narita airport, and we're happy to say he hasn't been arrested!
Some of the Fishermen from Taiji were at the screening, including "Private Space". Other audience members included Taiji Mayor Kazutaka Sangen, former Fisheries Official Hideki Moronuki, and Japanese IWC Commissioner Masayuki Komatsu (who once referred to minke whales as "cockroaches of the oceans").
The crowd's reaction was mixed, but one audience member summed it up nicely for press: "Although it's a difficult issue as it involves fishermen's jobs, it's also difficult to argue that all Japanese (AP Photo/Shuji Kajiyama)
traditions have to be maintained. I think if we find something wrong in our tradition, we should correct it."
As a good faith move, Psihoyos offered to show The Cove for free to Taiji residents, and even to give all of the profits from showing the film in Japan to Taiji as long as the fishermen end the dolphin drives.
A large number of news stories have come out about the events, and it's great to say that we are truly having an impact in Japan. A film really can change the world!
You can read a more detailed account of the events as told by Psihoyos here.
